Literature Text

Marry, you're catholic now.
I was Catholic once, ten years
Old and immersed in a baptismal
Fountain. When I went South,
Priests and pastors tried to
Hold me under and I learned to
Open my eyes under the water,
To pick apart communion with my
Teeth till it dissolved on my tongue.

Back when the towers burned and
People died, I was in sixth grade.
A self assured teacher put his index
Finger in the sky and told me that's
Were they went (heaven). That day,
I came up, gasping for air.

Marry,
When friends died you wrote a
Eulogy for every finger on your
Right hand and prayed with the
Middle one pointed at the ceiling.
We had something in common then.

I like the ways you chose to describe the emotions expressed, how you took the topic of religious questioning/defiance and turned it into your own with real life experiences and situations that others can relate to. Amazing piece.
